Sara Cox was overcome with emotion as she opened up about her relationship with husband Ben Cyzer, admitting she had been "given a second chance" after meeting him at Glastonbury Festival in 2006. Appearing on Vernon Kay's Tracks Of My Years, the Radio 2 Breakfast Show host selected ten songs that have soundtracked her life, including Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better, which she chose for a deeply personal reason.
Emotional Revelation on Air
When Vernon Kay asked why she had picked the song, Cox replied: "Oh, don't, Vernon. I just immediately cry because, I wasn't looking, but somehow he found me, and that was Ben, my husband." As she became emotional, she continued: "Oh gosh, I just got given a second chance, and I just love him so much. We're a great team."
Reflecting on their relationship, Cox praised Cyzer's unwavering support. She said: "He was just... to suddenly have someone who was not only kind and funny and hot and great and absolute vibes, but also just strong and supportive, and my other half. You know, whenever one of us was on a high or low career-wise, we just had each other's backs."
Meeting at Glastonbury
Cox revealed the couple first met backstage at Glastonbury Festival in 2006. She recalled how Cyzer made an impression almost immediately, suggesting they share "a bottle of champagne" to celebrate. She also remembered noticing how protective he was despite them only having known each other for a few hours. "He watched me. He kept an eye on me because I was quite famous then. At Glastonbury, people are quite messy. I was still on Radio 1 quite a bit and in the public eye, and I could feel him just keeping an eye on me so I wasn't getting bothered by people. He was protective, even though we'd only known each other for a few hours," she said.
Comparing Cyzer to previous relationships, Cox admitted his behaviour stood out. "Yeah, I'd never had that before. Before that, I'd been left by guys when we'd be in a club. They'd go off through the crowd and I'd be on my own in the middle of Bugged Out or Cream or whatever and just be like, 'Hello?'" She added: "Then I had someone looking out for me, and I was like, there's a great Yiddish word, mensch, which just means a good, solid guy. And that's what Ben is." Laughing, she joked: "'Solid' sounds a bit boring. He's annoyingly funny as well. He's nearly as funny as me."
Marriage and Family
Cox has been with advertising executive Ben Cyzer since 2006. He is now managing partner and strategy director at film and production company MPC. After dating for seven years, the pair married in a private ceremony in 2013, with Cox later announcing the news to fans on X, formerly Twitter. The couple share two children, while Cox also has a daughter from her first marriage to fellow DJ Jon Carter. They married in 2001 before separating in 2005, and Cox began dating Cyzer the following year.
Sara Cox will appear on Celebrity Gogglebox tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
