Manchester City midfielder Rodri played 60 minutes for Spain in their 3-1 World Cup warm-up victory over Peru, surviving a training ground injury scare just days before the tournament. The 29-year-old Ballon d'Or winner was on the receiving end of a robust challenge from Barcelona's Gavi during a training session in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Gavi's Challenge Sparks Concern
The incident occurred as Spain prepared for their final pre-World Cup friendly. Gavi caught Rodri on the foot, leaving him in visible pain. Rodri was eventually helped to his feet by Gavi, but the moment drew criticism online, with some accusing the Barcelona midfielder of being reckless so close to the tournament.
De la Fuente Defends Gavi
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente addressed the incident in his pre-match press conference. "This is football," he said. "It's training. The players are very committed, and nobody has to apologise to anybody. Everything is fine. We know Gavi, he has that energy, that drive. That's one of his virtues. He has to control it and ration it. But I want this Gavi."
Rodri's Injury History Adds to Concerns
Rodri's recent injury history made the challenge particularly worrying for fans. In September 2024, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear during a clash with Arsenal. He only returned to action for Manchester City during the 2025 Club World Cup and has since faced multiple injury setbacks.
Rodri on His Return
Rodri had previously admitted doubts about his ability to return to top form. "When I came back, I had some doubts about being able to play normally again," he told DAZN. "I felt very limited, in a lot of pain. When you stop completely, your body brings out what it hasn't been able to do during that time. There was a moment of doubt where I wondered not just if I would return to my previous level, but if I would ever play again. I've proven that I have. I've returned to that consistency in my football. It's a long road, that's clear."
Rodri's 60-minute appearance against Peru, where he wore the captain's armband, suggests he is ready to lead Spain at the World Cup despite the training scare.
