Ray Quinn, the runner-up of the X Factor in 2006, has shared behind-the-scenes stories about Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, and what really went on during the show. Speaking to Smooth Spins, Smooth Radio's gaming brand, the former contestant revealed that away from the cameras, Simon displayed a "softer side".
Simon Cowell's Supportive Side
The then 18-year-old performer was guided by Simon Cowell, the programme's creator and the judge most famous for his cutting remarks. Ray shared: "He would always put his arm around me after a performance and tell me how well I'd done."
"He filled me with confidence, and he flew out to be in LA for the recording of my debut album. He cared and wanted me to do well. He would always say he felt proud of me," Ray added.
Looking back on his television days, he described the relationship he maintains with Simon, which appears to be built on mutual respect. While Ray cannot recall their last meeting, he suggests he's received messages from him via his team or other people.
Ray said: "I've been to events or awards shows, and someone who works with him has told me he says hello and sends his regards. We had a good time and did some great work. I look back fondly."
Sharon Osbourne's Lasting Impact
Despite Simon being his mentor as a contestant in the boys category, it was judge Sharon Osbourne who left an even more profound impression on his life. In fact, the singer described Sharon as a "big part" of his life, "even after the show".
Following his exit from the competition and being offered a record deal by Cowell, he travelled to L.A., where Sharon was amongst the first to make contact. The judge welcomed him to her home for dinner. Ray remembered: "I went to their Beverly Hills home that was featured on their reality show The Osbournes, so that was pretty surreal."
"Ozzy was there too, and he was such an amazing guy. My heart goes out to the whole family after his passing. I remember we sat down and had lamb to eat and lots of cups of tea. There were about 20 dogs running around, and Sharon even let me walk one around the neighbourhood," he said.
He portrays Ozzy as a "kind" man, who was eager to discuss his music and share some legendary wisdom. He told Ray to "keep going and enjoy every minute." Elaborating on the star-studded meal, the contestant shared: "It was like sitting with one of my mates' dads. He showed me all of his paintings that he liked to do too. He had a little art studio by the pool, and there were loads on the walls. He was a great artist and a wonderful man."
Judge Dynamics and Bootcamp Hiccup
Regarding the dynamics between the judges away from the cameras, he disclosed whether there was as much squabbling behind the scenes as viewers witnessed on screen. According to him, it was all a bit of a "pantomime".
He shared: "I think it was all a bit of a pantomime, really. They may have appeared in competition for the cameras, and I'm sure they wanted to win, but they got on well. They had a great time together, and I got to know all the judges, not just Simon."
Dramatic episodes were plentiful throughout the reality programme, and it was Bootcamp that emerged as one of the toughest experiences for Ray, when Simon chose not to progress him to the Judges' Houses stage. The pressure overwhelmed him and he forgot the lyrics during a performance, leaving him "devastated" when he failed to advance. Ray "thought his life was over", until Simon had a change of heart and brought him back into the competition.
"I was determined not to let him down or myself. I think that hiccup is what ultimately got me to the final," he explained. Now aged 38, he performs across the UK as a swing artist and brings his music to cruise ships and entertainment establishments throughout the world. He is married and has two children from two marriages.
