Princess Diana officially opened Sedgemoor Splash, a beloved indoor water park in Bridgwater, Somerset, in 1991. The venue quickly became a cherished family destination, featuring pools, water slides, flumes, and attractions suitable for a full day of entertainment. Affectionately nicknamed 'The Splash,' it brought a fresh leisure option to the area.
Closure and Redevelopment
After 18 years of operation, Sedgemoor Splash closed its doors in 2009. The closure was attributed to shrinking council budgets during the global financial crisis. Councillors determined that the annual running cost of £700,000 represented poor value for money, and funds were unavailable for necessary modernisation. The site was demolished and replaced by the Northgate Yard complex, a £16 million investment that includes a cinema, restaurants, a gym, and over 100 parking spaces.
Community Reaction
Former visitors expressed dismay on Facebook, sharing memories and lamenting the loss of the facility. One local wrote: 'Splash needs to be bought back! There's no decent pools anymore, let alone anywhere to go have fun!' Another user posted: 'Spent most of my teenage years there on a Saturday with my friends. It's a shame they knocked it down really. Maybe we wouldn't have the antisocial behaviour issues we have now if the teens had something like this still.' A third recalled: 'I remember taking my children here, so many happy hours spent having fun. Sad day it was closed.'
Protests and Campaigns
When the closure was announced, locals campaigned vigorously. Approximately 30 people occupied the pool, brandishing banners and swimming costumes in protest. Thirteen individuals remained inside the building overnight to cause disruption, and a petition gathered signatures. Despite these efforts, the site was redeveloped, and the leisure park shut permanently on August 30, 2009.
Alternative Water Park
Unity Splash Waterpark in Brean, about 30 minutes from Bridgwater, now serves as an alternative destination. It is set to receive a £10 million investment, adding two pool areas, a lazy river, a larger seating area for families, and a new boardwalk.
