Prince William is "considering" appearing in a television programme that could see him compete against his younger brother, Prince Harry. It had previously been reported that Harry was planning to make a documentary about their mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris aged 36 on August 31, 1997.
Diana had her two boys with her former husband, then-Prince Charles, before she and Charles formally separated in 1992. Diana's death, when William and Harry were 15 and 12 respectively, prompted international headlines and a flood of tributes. The royal was beloved for her championing of various important causes, among the most notable of which was her transformational efforts to destigmatise AIDS at the height of the epidemic in the 1980s.
Harry's Diana documentary plans
The 30th anniversary of her death falls next year and speculation has swirled about how members of the Royal Family will mark the occasion. Earlier this week, The Telegraph reported that Harry had approached several of Diana's friends and family members to ask whether they would take part in a film about her.
The newspaper quoted a source close to the Duke as saying he has "discussed a number of possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales's passing". "Nothing has been finalised or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy during this important anniversary year," they added.
William's considerations
Now Richard Eden, the Diary Editor of the Daily Mail and a prominent royal commentator, has claimed Prince William is "considering appearing in a different television programme about Princess Diana". He said a source told him the future King has "been approached with many offers and is thinking hard about what he wants to do".
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said they wouldn't comment on how Prince William chooses to mark the anniversary. The relationship between the Palace and the Sussexes is understood to have been fraught since Harry and Meghan's decision in early 2020 to step back as senior royals and move to the US.
Strained relations
While over there, they criticised the institution, with Harry speaking openly about tensions with other members of the famously private family, including Prince William. Despite the reported friction between the Palace and the Sussexes, the Duke has made short trips to see his father, King Charles, who is undergoing cancer treatment, and visited him with Meghan and their children in July.
But Harry and William appear to have had precious little contact in recent years, if any. They aren't thought to have even been in the same room as each other since the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes in the summer of 2024, so there appears to be little prospect of them collaborating on a Diana documentary. Harry and Meghan and their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, returned to the UK for an extended stay in late August.
