Prince Harry's Six Recent Attempts to Upstage the Royal Family

Prince Harry's latest interview with GQ was released on the same day that King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales stepped out in rainy Windsor for the Sultan of Oman's state visit to the UK. Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said was greeted by the monarch in the open air outside Windsor and Eton Riverside station amid autumn downpours. The pomp and pageantry will continue this evening at a glittering state banquet at Windsor Castle.

The 42-year-old has raised eyebrows on several occasions over scheduling clashes with the royals. As well as today, Harry has been accused of making announcements, stepping out at court and even sharing video messages minutes after important royal engagements. Here, the Daily Express delves into six of the most recent times Harry has stepped on the Royal Family's toes.

Harry Denied Upstaging William's Brazil Trip

Prince Harry previously denied claims that he tried to upstage Prince William by announcing his Toronto trip just as his estranged brother arrived in Brazil for The Earthshot Prize last November. Harry, like his brother William, was set for a busy week as he is set to jet to Canada, while William spent a few days in South America. Although Harry is said to have had the Toronto trip in the diary for some time, he received some backlash for announcing it on the same day William arrived in Brazil.

Accused of Upstaging the King Last Year

Prince Harry was previously accused of "deliberately trying to upstage his father" as he arrived at the High Court last April for his "last chance saloon" appeal over his security arrangements in the UK. This appearance came just over a year before his recent return to Britain with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children. On the same day as Harry's court appearance, King Charles and Queen Camilla met with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter Laura Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace in Rome, during their state visit to Italy. The King and Queen also celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary during their state visit, and released official photographs to mark the special occasion.

Upstaging VJ Day and Sharing a Message During Trooping the Colour

Harry was previously blasted for his "PR stunt" on VJ Day, with one royal expert accusing him of trying to "upstage" Prince William and Princess Catherine. The King led the royals as the nation commemorated the 80th anniversary of VJ Day last August during the national service of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum. Whilst Catherine and William did not attend, the Duke of Sussex left a wreath and a note at the Burma Star Memorial. Harry paid a poignant tribute to his late grandfather, Prince Philip, in the letter, which was placed after Charles and Camilla left to avoid being distracted from the service.

Harry was previously criticised for sharing a new message online just minutes after the Royal Family stepped out at this year's Trooping the Colour. The 42-year-old featured in a message to the Invictus Germany Sports Festival 2026, which takes place between June 12 and 14. The carriages left Buckingham Palace to head down The Mall at approximately 10.45am, with the message from Harry shared online around 11.11am.

Nottingham and Wales Visit Clash

As the couple made their first public appearance since their UK return last week, the King and Queen attended the state opening of the Welsh Parliament for the first time. The couple returned to Nottingham, the exact city where they had their first visit after their engagement. King Charles delivered an address in the chamber, expressing his "special connection" to Wales and speaking a portion of his speech in Welsh. On the same day, Meghan and Harry attended three separate visits in Nottingham. The couple are no longer working royals.
