Meghan Markle told her Suits co-star Patrick J. Adams she was "just going out to get milk" after news of her engagement to Prince Harry broke in 2017, according to the BBC.
The 45-year-old actress played Rachel Zane in the legal drama for seven seasons until 2018, with her final episode airing just months before she married Prince Harry. The couple announced their engagement in 2017, with Meghan confirming she would step away from acting after they got married.
Co-star's heartfelt message
Patrick J. Adams, 45, who appeared as the titular character Mike Ross, Meghan's on-screen love interest, was one of the first people to react to the royal engagement. He penned a heartfelt message to his co-star on Instagram, writing: "Playing Meghan's television partner for the better part of a decade uniquely qualifies me to say this: Your Royal Highness. You are a lucky man and I know your long life together will be joyful, productive and hilarious."
He added: "Megham, so happy for you, friend. Much love."
Royal wedding and family life
Harry and Meghan tied the knot in May 2018 and welcomed their son, Prince Archie, the following year. Less than one year after Archie's birth, the Sussexes announced they were stepping down from their roles as senior working royals.
They relocated to Montecito, California, in July 2020, and Meghan gave birth to their daughter, Lilibet, almost one year later. But after six years, the couple have reportedly decided to move back to the UK, with Archie and Lilibet both already enrolled in British schools.
Planned return to the UK
The Sussexes will be residing in an undisclosed private, non-royal residence outside London. The news is said to have infuriated Prince William, who reportedly wants nothing to do with the couple.
Andrew Morton, author of the controversial 1992 biography Diana: Her True Story, believes Prince William will take a long time to recover from being "deeply hurt" by what Harry wrote in his 2023 memoir, Spare. Speaking on Times Radio, Andrew said: "I think William has been deeply hurt by what Harry wrote and said about him, especially given the medical condition of Catherine and his father."
He continued: "This is a word I would like to use in relation to this relationship. William felt utterly abandoned and that word was used by someone very close to William. I think it's going to take a long, long time for him to recover from that."
