Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first public appearance together since returning to Britain with a relaxed lunch at a Cotswolds pub. The couple chose The Falkland Arms, a 16th-century inn in Great Tew near Chipping Norton, for the low-key outing last Thursday (October 1).
Casual dress and a discreet presence
There was no formal dress code for the occasion. Prince Harry, 42, wore a baseball cap and jeans, while Meghan, 45, paired white trainers with an all-black outfit and sunglasses. The couple arrived hand-in-hand while their children were at school and enjoyed classic British pub grub.
Onlookers at the venue gave a three-word verdict, remarking that the pair "acted like locals" throughout their stay and maintained a discreet presence at the village watering hole.
A traditional English pub with period charm
The Falkland Arms is celebrated for its period charm, featuring flagstone floors, low oak-beamed ceilings, inglenook fireplaces, and a display of antique snuff boxes and copper tankards suspended from above. The venue serves traditional British comfort fare alongside local cask ales, quality wines, and a comprehensive whisky range.
Set in one of the Cotswolds' most picturesque thatched-cottage villages, it also provides snug accommodation and an alfresco dining area. Billing itself as a 'traditional English pub' on Instagram, the venue boasts a modest following of 5,768 followers. The establishment regularly posts updates about its weekly offers, including its well-loved Thursday Pie and Pint Night, priced at £18.95.
Bed and breakfast accommodation
Beyond serving as a pub, the premises also provides bed and breakfast accommodation. Rooms are decorated with quaint countryside charm, featuring traditional oak beams, low doorways (requiring taller guests to mind their heads), and characterful creaking wooden floorboards. Although the building dates back centuries, the rooms come fitted with modern en-suite bathrooms, and a full breakfast is provided downstairs in the dining area each morning.
This pub outing comes after Meghan was seen at another Cotswolds location last month, where she was photographed with friend Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi. The threesome met for a midday meal at The Three Horseshoes, an 18th-century coaching inn in the village of Asthall, near Burford, Oxfordshire. The visit marked a casual catch-up between the former Montecito, California neighbours, while Prince Harry was in London carrying out an engagement. Images captured Meghan dressed down in white jeans and a light blue shirt.
Unlike The Falkland Arms in Great Tew, The Three Horseshoes is nestled within the Windrush Valley and is considered a tranquil, low-key village escape. Television presenter and comedian Ellen, alongside Portia, relocated to the Cotswolds in November 2024. Ellen made it clear that Donald Trump's return to office was the primary catalyst behind their move. The couple arrived in England the day before Election Day, and after the results came through, opted to remain in Britain instead of returning to California.
