Russell Martin is preparing to raid Rangers for sports science chief Rhys Owen as he looks to reassemble his Ibrox back-room team at Leicester City. The former Light Blues boss is on the verge of being named the new Foxes gaffer following their relegation to League One down south.
Reuniting the Old Team
He wants to get the gang he had in Glasgow back together once he takes over at the King Power Stadium. He has already made his move for long-time assistant Matt Gill, who has been working as ex-Scotland international James Morrison’s No2 at West Brom since being sacked along with Martin just seven league games into last season.
Owen's History with Martin
Record Sport understands Martin also wants to take Gers’ Head of Performance Owen with him too. Owen has a long history working with Martin. He was head of rehab at Swansea City during the axed Gers coach’s tenure in Wales and then followed him to Southampton when Martin was named Saints boss in 2023. That relationship continued in Glasgow when Martin was appointed last summer.
But while the former Ibrox defender left along with Gill following a disastrous start to the season, Owen stayed on first to work under interim boss Stevie Smith and then new manager Danny Rohl. Owen has not yet informed Ibrox chiefs that he is leaving but senior figures at Rangers expect it will only be a matter of time before Martin makes his move for his old colleague.
