A former royal butler who worked with King Charles has revealed the advice he was given when he was unwell while on duty. Grant Harrold served as the royal butler for the King when he was the Prince of Wales from 2004 until 2011. During this time, Harrold spent considerable time with Charles, both at major events and in more private settings, which allowed him to know the King on a personal level.
The Advice During Illness
Speaking on The Royals Uncensored podcast this week, Harrold recounted a moment at Sandringham when he fell ill. “I remember being at Sandringham, and I had gone down with a really bad cold, the flu, during the dinner,” he said. “He (King Charles) was all kinds of worried about it, and I told him I’m going to take some pills. He said, ‘Yes, but you can’t just take pills’. He came up with this idea that I should have some whiskey, honey and warm water.”
King Charles's Holistic Approach
The monarch believes in both medicine and alternative treatments. “He believes in doing alternative things as well (as medicine),” Harrold added. The former butler followed the King's advice, preparing the mixture which he described as strong, but it helped him get through the dinner.
Working with the Royal Family
In his role, Harrold also worked for Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Catherine, and Prince Harry. He spent time with the late Queen Elizabeth II, whom he frequently praises for her good sense of humour.
