King Charles III is reportedly "warming" to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to royal journalist Omid Scobie. However, the commentator has also claimed that the Sussexes' relationship with Prince William "will never change".
Private meeting at Highgrove
Scobie, once dubbed Harry and Meghan's "cheerleader", said the relationship between the King and the Sussexes has moved forward in recent times. The King met with the Sussexes earlier this summer for a private meeting at Highgrove House, marking the first time he had seen Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet since 2022.
It is also reported that Harry has been in regular contact with his father since returning to the UK at the end of August.
William rift unchanged
Meanwhile, Scobie explained that the relationship between the Sussexes and Prince William is unlikely to change. He added that even Princess Catherine has little influence over the relationship between the two sides.
He told the Daily Mail: "I think we've seen with Charles that things have moved forward and the iciness has thawed out, there's a warmth there. But, with William, I don't see it will ever change."
He added: "There's always this talk about Kate being the peacekeeper, the one that could bring the two brothers together. If I've learned anything over the years from covering them, it's that Kate has very little to do with that relationship between the brothers."
Official roles clarified
Despite the reported private family warmth between the King and the Sussexes, Buckingham Palace has maintained a clear boundary regarding their official roles. Following their return to the UK, the King issued a formal letter which clarified that Harry and Meghan remain "non-working royals".
William and Harry last met in person at the memorial service for their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in August 2024. Their last public appearance in the same place came at the King's coronation in May 2023. The brothers remain estranged and are believed not to be on speaking terms, having actively avoided making contact since Harry returned to the UK.
