King Charles has paid tribute to King Harald V of Norway following the announcement of his death at the age of 89.
In a personal statement, the King expressed his sadness at the loss of his cousin, describing the late monarch's 35-year reign with words of deep affection and respect.
A message of condolence
King Charles began his message by saying: "It is with the most profound sadness that my wife and I have learned of the death of my dear cousin, King Harald V of Norway."
He continued: "For thirty-five years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility."
The King added: "As Norway mourns the loss of so towering a figure, my whole family join in remembering a much-loved kinsman and friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades."
Historic ties between nations
In his tribute, King Charles highlighted the close historical and family connections between the United Kingdom and Norway.
He noted that Britain was one of the first countries to recognise Norwegian independence and establish diplomatic relations in 1905, with these bonds strengthened further during the Second World War.
The message concluded with the King extending "deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Queen Sonja and all her family", adding that Britain shares in Norway's grief at this time of "heartbreaking loss".
