King Charles' 'desperate desire' for his reign revealed

King Charles has one "desperate desire" he hopes to fulfil during his reign, according to royal biographer Robert Jobson, who claims the monarch remains determined to make a lasting impact on Britain.

Writing in his book The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal, and Survival, Jobson said King Charles's ambitions have remained largely unchanged since before he ascended the throne. Jobson wrote that King Charles had previously spoken of a "desperate desire" to "restore greatness to Britain" and claimed that the monarch's ambition "burns still".

King Charles' role as sovereign

The comments come as King Charles continues to establish his own role as sovereign following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose long reign continues to shape the royal family's public image. According to Jobson, King Charles has gradually "carved out his role as the nation's patriarch", while maintaining many of the causes and interests he championed for decades as Prince of Wales.

"He has never been one to idle," Jobson wrote, adding that King Charles had continued working even while undergoing treatment for cancer. The biographer said King Charles had spent years trying "to make a difference, to illuminate dark corners, to champion causes" and suggested that becoming monarch had not changed the underlying aims that had motivated him throughout his public life.

"Even though he now wears the crown, it has not bound him," Jobson wrote. He claimed that King Charles now speaks his mind less frequently and avoids some of the conflicts that can arise with government ministers, while continuing to bring people together to address major issues.

Constitutional limits and impact

Jobson's comments also point to the difference between King Charles's longstanding personal interests and the constitutional limits of the monarchy. As King, he is expected to remain politically neutral, while his public work includes supporting charities and causes across areas such as the environment, sustainability and communities.

The royal biographer added that King Charles's projects and initiatives provide an indication of how he views his role. "His work and projects he initiated speak louder, proving leadership is not about show," Jobson wrote. "For him, it is all about impact."

Monarchy's standing

Jobson also suggested that King Charles's reign has so far maintained the standing of the monarchy despite what he described as a "fractured world". "If anything in this fractured world, under Charles's stewardship the standing of the monarchy has held firm," he wrote.

King Charles's approach marks a new chapter for the Royal Family after Queen Elizabeth II's seven-decade reign. King Charles became King in September 2022 following his mother's death and was formally crowned alongside Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey in May 2023.
