Princess Kate Avoids Alcohol Post-Cancer Diagnosis During Brewery Visit
Kate Avoids Alcohol After Cancer Diagnosis at Brewery Visit

The Princess of Wales has openly discussed her decision to avoid alcohol following her cancer diagnosis during a visit to London's Bermondsey Beer Mile with Prince William. The royal couple toured the Southwark Brewing Company and Fabal Beerhall on Thursday, engaging with local brewers and participating in brewery activities.

Royal Visit to Independent Breweries

William and Kate were invited to sample various beers and ciders at the Fabal Beerhall before moving behind the bar at the Southwark Brewing Company. The Bermondsey Beer Mile represents a celebrated route of independent breweries and taprooms located in the London Bridge area of southeast London. During their visit, the princess, who is currently in remission after being diagnosed with cancer in 2024, inquired about non-alcoholic options.

Kate's Personal Health Decision

When Fabal Beerhall founder Hannah Rhodes asked if Kate was a beer drinker, the princess responded that since her diagnosis, it has been best for her to avoid alcohol entirely. Kate expressed being conscious about consuming alcohol given her health circumstances. Rhodes confirmed to the Press Association that Kate mentioned her avoidance of alcohol directly related to her cancer diagnosis.

The princess showed particular interest in how the brewery uses raw British honey in their brewing process. Prince William humorously noted that his wife keeps bees herself, joking that Rhodes should be careful with her explanations. Despite William sampling lager and cider during the visit, Kate abstained from all alcoholic beverages.

Friendly Competition and Brewery Activities

At the Southwark Brewing Company, the royal couple participated in a pint-pulling contest against founder and managing director Peter Jackson. After some initial hesitation from Kate, who exclaimed "Oh no" when challenged, Jackson demonstrated the technique before both royals attempted the task themselves.

Jackson coached them through the process and even offered them weekend employment, stating they could return on Saturday for a shift. Prince William confidently declared their pints superior to Jackson's own creation. The couple later spoke with Jackson's son William via video call to wish him a happy birthday, with the prince joking they were trying not to ruin the brewery.

Hands-On Brewing Experience

The visit included practical brewing activities where both William and Kate donned rubber gloves to participate in the production process. Prince William poured hops into the mixture while Kate stirred the boil using a large wooden stick. Their engagement demonstrated genuine interest in the craft brewing industry and its techniques.

As they departed, the princess waved to a small group of well-wishers gathered outside hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. The visit highlighted both the personal health choices Kate has made since her diagnosis and the couple's support for independent British businesses.
