From Turkish Holiday to Bus Ride Surprise: A Love Story Unfolds

Most bus journeys fade into the background of daily life, but for Les Bishop, a routine commute in 1999 became the setting for a moment that would define his future. While traveling to work, an unexpected phone call from his partner, Tina, delivered a surprise that left him speechless and sparked applause from fellow passengers.

A Chance Meeting in Bodrum

Les Bishop, now 64 and working as a senior crime scene investigator, first crossed paths with Tina in 1997. He was employed as a holiday representative in the vibrant resort of Bodrum, Turkey, while she was enjoying a vacation. "There was an instant connection between us," Les recalls. "We maintained contact after that summer, though our mobile phone bills were astronomical." Driven by his feelings, Les made a pivotal decision to relocate to Harlow in Essex, where Tina resided, securing a position at a travel agency. "It was the best choice I ever made—she was undoubtedly the one," he affirms, describing their early years as filled with joy, shared adventures, and mutual exploration.

The Unforgettable Bus Call

In 1999, the couple had arranged a holiday to Disneyland Florida, but plans took an unexpected turn. On a Saturday morning, as Les rode the bus to work, Tina called with news that would alter their lives. "She exclaimed that our holiday was now a honeymoon because she had booked a registry office and we were getting married," Les explains. Overwhelmed with emotion, he was so shocked that he spoke loudly without realising it. Upon ending the call, the entire bus erupted into applause, a memory he cherishes to this day. "I was completely taken aback—it was the most thrilling surprise imaginable," he adds.

Building a Family and Life Together

Les and Tina married in October 1999 in Broxbourne, surrounded by friends and family, and opted for a honeymoon in Tunisia instead of Disneyland for a shorter flight. Their union has flourished over the years, blessed with two children: George, born in 2002 after successful IVF treatment, and Holly, who arrived in 2004 on the first day of Les's CSI course. They also have an 11-month-old grandson. Les reflects on their bond, stating, "Tina is everything I could ever wish for—caring, compassionate, and always there for others." He highlights their mutual support during difficult times, such as the loss of his twin sister and her father. Every bus ride since reminds him of that fateful day.

Tina's Perspective on Their Journey

Tina, 60 and a nurse, shares her side of the story, admitting she was uncertain about Les's reaction to her cryptic proposal. "He was just as delighted as I was to tie the knot," she says. She describes their life together as stable and loving, filled with gratitude for their children. Currently, Holly and their grandson are living with them while saving for a home, adding to their happiness. "Les is hardworking, supportive, and occasionally grumpy, but that's part of his charm," Tina jokes. "We've built a wonderful life that continues to thrive."

Celebrating Love on the Move

In a related development, Stagecoach is honouring love stories like Les and Tina's through its Ticket for Life competition. Three finalists are now competing for free bus travel for life, with the winner to be determined by a public vote on the Stagecoach website. This initiative underscores how everyday journeys can lead to extraordinary moments, much like the bus ride that changed Les Bishop's life forever.
