Hidden Details in William and Kate's 15th Anniversary Photo Revealed
Hidden Details in William and Kate's Anniversary Photo

From Princess Charlotte's trendy new manicure to a sweet new puppy, a number of hidden details offer a rare insight into the family life of the Prince and Princess of Wales in their 15th anniversary photo. The sweet portrait, taken in Cornwall earlier this month during the Easter break, commemorates a decade and a half of marriage for William and Kate, who spent the day visiting IntoUniversity, an education charity that benefited from Their Royal Highnesses’ Royal Wedding Gift Fund in 2011. The couple then had lunch at The Goring together, where Catherine had stayed the night before their wedding.

Royal well-wishers could not get enough of the 'beautiful family's' latest snap taken by Matt Porteous, featuring the relaxed parents basking in the sun with their children, all lying barefoot on the grass. Fans congratulated the future King and Queen in the comments section, with one person writing that they remember the royal wedding as if it were 'yesterday'. Many also remarked on Kate's impressive sense of style, as well as the scenic coastal location, and some could not believe 'how tall Prince George had gotten'.

Going Barefoot

Breaking from the tradition of more posed family portraits, William, Kate, and their children channelled a more candid atmosphere, laughing and casually lying down on the grass for the snap. Sporting casual beach outfits, they also all went barefoot, something the family has done in previously released photos, including a 2024 birthday snap for the Prince of Wales. The laid-back approach is seen by many as the future King's attempt to do royal life in a more modern, relaxed way, letting people into the more un-posed parts of their life. Speaking to actor Eugene Levy on Apple TV+'s The Reluctant Traveler that same year, William said he 'enjoys' feeling like he can bring change to the royal family and 'doesn't fear it'. 'That’s the bit that excites me, the idea of being able to bring some change,' he added. 'I want to question things more. Are we still doing and having the most impact we could be having? If you’re not careful, history can be a real weight and an anchor around you, and you can feel suffocated by it. I think it’s important to live for the here and now.'

The Dogs

The Wales family turned out in full force for the sweet photo, with even the four-legged members joining in. It appears that huddling next to William is the family's black cocker spaniel Orla, who was receiving affectionate strokes from the royal. A brown dog could also be seen roaming behind them, but its name is not yet known. Earlier this year, Kate confirmed that her family has welcomed a new furry addition after meeting an English cocker spaniel during an engagement in Wales. 'We have the same breed of dog,' she said at the event, according to Hello. After being asked how old their dog was, the Princess replied: 'So we've got a little puppy, he's only eight months, and Orla's five.' The latest addition may be one of Orla's, who gave birth to quadruplets in May. Cocker spaniel Orla joined the Wales family in 2020 as a gift from Kate's brother James Middleton, who is well known for breeding dogs. The Waleses are thought to have welcomed Orla in 2020, the same year that their former family dog, Lupo, died. A source at the time told The Mail on Sunday that the whole family were 'besotted' with their new pup. 'They were devastated when Lupo passed away,' the friend added. 'It was hoped that a younger dog would give Lupo some company and give him a little more life and energy.' The cocker spaniel was the puppy of James Middleton's dog, Ella. James is patron of several dog-related charities, founder of a dog food brand, and author of a book about one of his late dogs, titled Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life. Since adopting Orla, she has been a devoted friend to the couple's children and was even included in their daughter's birthday portraits in 2022 and 2023. Orla also appeared on the Royal Family's social media channels for National Pet Day last year. A photograph of the black cocker spaniel was shared online with the caption: 'Celebrating the animals who bring so much joy, companionship and love to our lives'.

Charlotte's Nail Polish

Charlotte sported funky blue nail polish in the photo, enjoying the sunshine while showing off her new manicure. She seems to be embracing her tween years as the young princess, who turns 11 on May 2, opted for an icy blue colour that caught the light. The first time Charlotte was seen wearing nail polish in public was at Wimbledon last July. The princess showed off her bubblepink manicure as she put on an animated display while watching Carlos Alcaraz take on Jannik Sinner in a tense final at centre court.

Cornwall Holiday from Louis' Birthday Portrait

The sunny holiday photo may have looked familiar to eagle-eyed fans, as it is the same holiday on which they captured Prince Louis' eighth birthday montage. The family enjoyed an Easter break to Cornwall, and last week the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a rare glimpse into their family life with a heartwarming video to thank supporters for sending 'birthday wishes' for their youngest son. Prince William and Kate's youngest son was filmed playing in the sand, enjoying a game of cricket, and running along the beach during a fun-filled holiday by the beach. Proving he is just as adventurous as he is cheeky, the fearless young royal was also captured eagerly diving into the sea from a height. The sweet clip was posted on Kensington Palace's social media accounts with the message: 'Thank you for all the birthday wishes for Prince Louis. 8 is great!' A love of the water runs in the family. William used to surf while studying in St Andrews, while Kate is a fan of cold water swimming. It is not known which beach the royals visited, but the Prince of Wales inherited the vast Duchy of Cornwall landed estate and the title Duke of Cornwall when he became heir to the throne in 2022.

Tall George

The family's eldest son lay shoulder to shoulder by his father and was nearly the same height. Earlier this month, royal fans were in awe at how tall Prince George had gotten as he towered over his siblings during an Easter Service. Wearing a smart suit, the heir to the throne was nearly as tall as his mother, the Princess of Wales, when she was in heels and is already well above the 6ft 3in Prince of Wales' shoulder. Well-wishers could not believe that the young royal is 'growing up so fast' and think he is 'going to bypass Kate by Christmas'. 'I still can't get over how tall Prince George is getting and he's only 12!' one wrote on social media, while another gushed: 'Time slow down. You can see how tall Prince George is here especially with Catherine wearing heels.' And the family's eldest son proved the same once again as he lay shoulder to shoulder by his father and was nearly the same height.

Kate's Sophisticated Outfit

Smiling in the sun as they lay in the grass, the happy couple was perfectly dressed for an Easter getaway by the seaside. The Princess of Wales effortlessly channelled coastal fashion in a £298 striped cashmere sweater from Veronica Beard and white trousers. Catherine also wore the £119 Bexley Cigarette Trousers from one of her favourite designers, Holland Cooper.

William's Laidback Look

While looking smart for his anniversary photo, William's look was much more laid back than his wife's. The Prince sported a khaki £90 polo, which he teamed with shorts, ready for some beach action, from midmarket brand Hackett.

Matching Colours

While William was wearing dark green, all the kids were matching in blue tops of varying shades. Eldest George was wearing a navy button-up, while Charlotte matched her pastel blue manicure to her tee. Elsewhere, Louis was the middle ground, in a summery turquoise shirt.

Family's Favourite Photographer

It is perhaps no wonder that the Waleses look so relaxed in the photo, as the man behind the camera is behind many of their official family portraits. Matt Porteous, the photographer behind many of the royals' most memorable shots, is also remembered for taking a stunning birthday portrait of Catherine, which had fans praising her for being the perfect 'modern and relatable' Princess. The black and white image showed the Princess relaxed at home, in jeans, a blazer, and checked scarf. She posed with her hands in her pocket, showing off her dazzling engagement ring, while wearing her hair in a gentle wave. Matt Porteous has taken pictures of William, Kate, and their children dozens of times, as well as accompanying them on royal tours.
