Prince Harry's return to the UK has put the spotlight on his relationship with his brother, Prince William, and the pair could be back on speaking terms if they work together, according to a royal commentator.
The Duke of Sussex has officially moved back to the UK with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children - Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet - six years after leaving for North America. The details of the family's new home have not been revealed for security reasons, but it is known they have secured a base outside London, thought to be in the Cotswolds.
King Charles Faces a Juggling Act
Many have speculated that the King's cancer battle was a major catalyst for Harry's return. Former BBC royal commentator Jennie Bond saw Harry's return as a major test for Charles on "juggling his relationships with his two sons back in the UK."
Speaking to Sky News, Bond said: "[King Charles] Feeling immensely loyal to his son and heir, William, who has stood by through thick and thin in the last six years, and he is immensely loyal to his father and to the monarchy, to the job. And Harry, if you bring Harry close, are you going to offend the other one deeply? Or is William going to face up to what I think is the fact of the matter? That as things stand, it's untenable to never speak to your brother again, isn't it? And possible unnecessary."
An Apology and a Private Path Forward
Bond suggested that an apology from Harry and Meghan could help, as they have "said and done things that have been deeply hurtful." She added: "A recognition, acknowledgment from the palace, that they could have done things better perhaps. That all could be done privately. Then surely they can all move forward and we can move forward and be civil."
The commentator also noted that with the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death approaching next year, she cannot see the brothers' relationship continuing as it is. "It's nearly August 31, and then next year, it's the 30th anniversary of Diana's death. There are events planned," she said. "There will be commemorations. Are they going to both be there? Neither of you, are they gonna be there and look in different directions? The brothers don't have to be best buddies, but can they not have a civil and courteous relationship?"
A Chance to Heal
A close friend of Harry provided an update on the brothers' relationship, according to News 24, saying: "There is a chance it will all heal." The insider added that as Harry and his family return to England, it "is the best opportunity we have seen in recent years."
"It is going to be challenging for William. It will be very hard for him and Catherine," the friend said.
