The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have one chance to get their return to the UK right, or their hopes of making Britain their permanent home could collapse. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived back in the UK on August 26 with their two children, ready to settle once again in Harry's home country.
Having left UK life more than six years ago, the move will naturally be an adjustment. Much has changed in that time, not least public opinion of the couple. After the criticisms Harry and Meghan have directed at the royals and at Britain, not everyone is a fan, meaning life in the UK is unlikely to be plain sailing.
A crucial first public appearance
There is one big chance to turn public opinion around and prove they can be forgiven for past remarks: their first public appearance together in the UK. When that will be, and what it will look like, is anyone's guess right now. It could be within days, weeks, or even months, and it could even take place at the WellChild 2026 awards in September.
Whenever it happens, they need to get it right. They need to step out, smile, stay strong and united, and show that the past drama has not crossed the Atlantic with them from California. They need to show they will not launch surprises at the royals, make damaging statements, or criticise Britain as a country.
Winning back public trust
Only then will members of the public start to trust them and their intentions again. If that happens, Harry and Meghan and their children could live a very happy life in Britain. That would be the best-case scenario; they are reportedly a lovely family, and well-wishers hope they succeed.
But if the drama continues, people won't want them back. Many Brits are done with the drama and feel protective of the Royal Family, and they won't appreciate criticism from the couple on UK soil. The first UK engagement upon their return will be critical in determining their UK future, and only they can decide which way they want it to go.
