Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's planned return to the UK could 'expose any cracks' in their relationship, according to a relationship expert. The couple announced last week they are setting up a private home base in the United Kingdom after six years living in California.
The relocation will be to a non-royal residence reportedly outside London, and will not involve a return to official royal duties. The decision followed a discreet family trip to England, which reportedly acted as a catalyst for reconciliation. Prince Harry is said to wish to be nearer to his family, particularly his father, King Charles III, who is battling cancer. The King was made aware of the plans and reportedly looks forward to seeing more of his grandchildren.
Pressure test for the couple
Sex, dating and relationship therapist Georgina Vass suggests that stressful situations can act as pressure tests for couples, especially if aspects of the move unfold in the public eye. She stated that this pressure can reveal existing cracks, but it can also strengthen the bond when partners respond as a team rather than as adversaries.
Asked how the couple can ensure their relationship withstands the pressures of the move, Vass exclusively told us: "Difficult experiences can strengthen relationships if both partners choose to respond by moving closer rather than further apart."
"Shifting the mindset to 'us vs them' can allow a couple to focus on their shared goals or values and their endurance can deepen their connection," she added.
"Staying emotionally connected during conflicts, tolerating disappointment or losses together, and maintaining trust through consistent engagement can help couples to emerge with a stronger bond, enhancing feelings of loyalty and mutual support."
Advice for Meghan and security concerns
Regarding Meghan specifically, who is relocating away from the US once again, Vass suggests she can combat feelings of isolation by establishing local social networks separate from Prince Harry. "A common complaint from the accompanying partner is a loss of self whereas the partner with the primary connection to the new location often has routines, roles, and a structure to fall back on," she said.
"The roles assigned to the accompanying partner through the relocation may not have been their top choice, but many people can choose to take on alternative roles that resonate with their identity and feel fulfilling."
Her remarks come following reports that the Duchess of Sussex has been in discussions for acting roles in the UK, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Meghan will also continue to run her US lifestyle brand, As Ever, from their new headquarters.
Harry and Meghan's comeback has left some Britons baffled after Harry recently voiced his security concerns about being in the UK. Since they are returning as private citizens rather than working royals, The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) will need to re-evaluate their protection status, as previous decisions only covered temporary visits to the country.
