Harry and Meghan 'hate' working royal label, friend says

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly frustrated by the terminology used to define their status outside of the British monarchy, objecting to labels they consider both lazy and misleading. According to sources close to the couple speaking with The Sunday Times, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex strongly dislike the phrase "working members of the Royal Family."

Couple's objections to the label

While the traditional phrase distinguishes royals who perform official duties for the Crown from those who do not, a friend of the couple noted that "working members of the Royal Family" is a really lazy phrase, adding: "He hates it, she hates it. They are not working for the institution, but they are members of the Royal Family, and they work. Their days are built around their family life and their work. She's running a business seven days a week."

Furthermore, the couple reportedly takes issue with being called "former royals," arguing that the label distorts public perception. Following a recent joint public engagement in Nottingham, their friend pointed out that Harry remains the King's son and a member of the family, even if he no longer represents the institution, reports the Express.

Contrast with Crown directives

This pushback from the Sussexes contrasts sharply with recent directives from the Crown. King Charles - who has not met with the couple during their recent time in the UK - reportedly circulated a strict letter to government departments, lord lieutenants, and military officials.

The directive explicitly reiterates that Harry and Meghan are non-working royals and must be regarded strictly as "private citizens with commercial and charitable interests."
