The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have condemned international paparazzi for an “unacceptable intrusion” into their children’s privacy after two photographers were spotted peering into the grounds of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s school.
The couple’s security team and school staff raised the alarm after two young men carrying backpacks were seen walking the perimeter of the premises, stopping at various intervals to look into the grounds. The individuals were initially observed acting separately before joining up and heading back to a white van. Police subsequently established that the vehicle was a rental and identified the men as international press photographers.
“Extraordinarily reckless” behaviour
Condemning their actions, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “The decision by photographers to conduct themselves in this way around a school is extraordinarily reckless.
“There is a world of difference between legitimate media activity and photographers walking the perimeter of a school, stopping to look into the grounds and monitoring children as they go about their day.
“It is concerning enough that certain European paparazzi appear unwilling to respect the privacy of children at school. But to behave in this manner in these particular circumstances, and so soon after the incident at RAF Fairford, demonstrates an extraordinary lack of judgment.
“Whatever photographs they may have been seeking, this was not only an unacceptable intrusion into the privacy of children; it was an irresponsible and ill-considered way to conduct themselves in the vicinity of a school.”
Safety concerns and review
Since relocating from the US, Harry and Meghan have voiced concerns about safety. These fears led them to withdraw Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet from their original new school after the convoy of vehicles travelling there became separated in heavy traffic.
The Home Office continues to conduct a review into whether the family should receive taxpayer-funded protection. It is understood to be something Harry has tried to secure on multiple occasions since losing it in 2020 when he chose to step away from royal duties.
The pictures thought to have been taken by the photographers have not been published by any British media outlets.
