Sarah, Duchess of York, has opened up about the pain of being excluded from Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011, saying the snub made her feel 'totally worthless'. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey shortly after the royal wedding, Fergie admitted she was not invited to the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011, and instead chose to travel to Thailand.
The Duchess, who was married to Prince Andrew from 1986 to 1996, said she had wanted to be there with her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who attended with their father. 'It was so difficult. I wanted to be there with my girls, and to be getting them dressed and to go as a family,' she told Oprah. 'And also, it was so hard because the last bride up that aisle was me.'
Sarah said she understood why she was left off the guest list, citing her past mistakes, including a 2010 scandal where she was caught offering an undercover reporter access to Prince Andrew for £500,000. 'I went through the phase of feeling so totally worthless and that [it] was quite right they didn't invite me,' she said. 'Why would they - why would they invite me?'
She added that she had 'ostracised' herself through her behaviour and lived with regrets. Despite the hurt, Sarah praised Kate's appearance, saying Princess Diana would have been proud. 'I really love the feeling that sort of Diana and I both weren't there,' she said. 'But I'm here to say how proud she would have been and Kate looked utterly beautiful.'
In recent months, Sarah's ties with the royal family have further deteriorated following her connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She has been stripped of her Duchess title and asked to leave Royal Lodge, the home she shared with Andrew.
