Dolly Parton, who died on 25 August 2026, shared a decades-long love story with her husband of 58 years, Carl Dean. A businessman who ran a paving company, Carl kept a notably low profile, unlike his megastar wife.
Why Carl Dean stayed out of the spotlight
Speaking on Khloé Kardashian's podcast, Khloé In Wonder Land, last year, Dolly revealed why he never appeared in public with her. "My husband did not want to be out there. He never did an interview in his life," the country legend explained.
"When I first got here, I won Song of the Year, and I won a BMI award in 1966, the year we got married. He rented a tuxedo, but didn't want to do it. I begged him to go."
"When we were leaving, he started taking off the jacket and said, 'Now, I want you to do great, but don't you ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things, 'cause I ain't going.' And he never did."
Keeping their marriage private
"I knew right then that I was just gonna keep him private as best I could," Dolly continued. "Never ask him to do nothing, and certainly he wasn't gonna volunteer. He was very proud of me, but we got along great because we didn't have anything to fight over like that."
Dolly, who met Carl on her first day in Nashville in 1964, was frequently asked about the secret to their marriage. "My husband and I, we've been together 56 years," she told People in 2020. "We've just been married 54 years this past May. But we still have our little times, like in the springtime when the first yellow daffodils came out."
"Even if there's still some snow around it, my husband always brings me a bouquet. And he'll usually write me a little poem. Which, to me, that's priceless. That's like a date in itself."
Carl Dean's death and Dolly's tribute
Carl died on 3 March 2025. His cause of death was never publicly disclosed. In a heartbreaking Instagram post, Dolly wrote, "I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old."
"We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him: 'If You Hadn't Been There.'"
Dolly died on 25 August 2026, just one year after her beloved husband. Confirming the news, her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said: "Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens."
