A co-star who worked alongside Clare Balding on BBC Radio 4 has revealed what the broadcaster is really like off-air. The revelation came after Clare appeared on the Bookmarks radio programme, where guest panellists competed to name as many Stephen King novels as possible.
Behind the Scenes of Bookmarks
The quiz featured panellists Morgan, Eleanor, Jon and Danny competing in teams. Each team first bid on how many Stephen King novels they could name, then worked through their list to reach the target. Jon and Morgan emerged victorious with 12 novels named.
Morgan later took to Instagram to explain what happened behind the scenes. He said: 'Hello! I was on this episode: we were specifically told novels only, no short story collections (like Different Seasons, which contains The Body and The Shawshank Redemption) and no novellas or serial novels (like The Green Mile). It was called Bookmarks and is available to listen to on BBC Sounds! Clare Balding was lovely.'
Public Encounters with Clare Balding
Other members of the public have shared their positive experiences meeting Clare. One Reddit user recalled bumping into her at Royal Ascot. They posted: 'I was working in Wine Rack during Royal Ascot week about a decade ago. She got a few bottles of rose. Nice lady, seemed like any other person, thought nothing of it. About 10 seconds later my manager gave me the old “you know who that was, right?”'
Another person, who owned a shop, said: 'I met David Bowie and Brian Eno while babysitting for Brian's brother, both utterly charming and very kind, I was a tongue-tied embarrassment. Sue Perkins and Jenny Eclair I served at a private dinner, they were very, very polite, Jenny offered to help us in the kitchen, loved them both. Lenny Henry, Clare Balding, Dawn French and Greg Davies have all been in my shop and all were very nice.'
