As families across the United Kingdom celebrate Mother's Day, the Wales family is honouring Princess Kate with special plans, while the children also remember their late grandmother, Princess Diana. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are focusing their attention on their mother, the Princess of Wales, for a day likely filled with pampering and affection.
A Tribute to Two Grandmothers
Beyond Kate, the young royals are expected to express gratitude to their grandmother Carole Middleton, who has been instrumental in their upbringing and a steadfast support following Kate's cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment. Additionally, the children hold their other grandmother, Princess Diana, in their thoughts, despite never having met her.
Charlotte's Emotional Message
Several years ago, Prince William shared Mother's Day cards created by the children for Diana, with Princess Charlotte's containing a particularly touching note. Her message, written on a fuchsia-coloured card adorned with a hand-drawn multi-coloured heart, explicitly mentioned how much her father misses his mother.
Charlotte wrote: "Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on mother's day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxxxxxx".
George and Louis' Contributions
Older brother George used cursive writing on bright green card to say: "Dear granny Diana, Happy happy Mother's Day. I love you very much and think of you always, sending lots of love from George xxxxx." Meanwhile, Prince Louis, who was just two at the time, also used green card for his Mother's Day creation, which featured a colourful heart surrounded by several animals stuck onto the card.
These cards were posted on the official Twitter account for the Prince and Princess of Wales, accompanied by a heartfelt message and four images, showcasing the family's enduring connection to Diana.
William's Commitment to Diana's Legacy
In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince William spoke candidly about his dedication to ensuring his children know all about their late grandmother. He expressed a strong desire for George, Charlotte, and Louis to understand who Diana was and that she existed, emphasising that he "constantly" talks to them about "Granny Diana" at bedtime.
William explained: "We've got more photos up around the house now of her and we talk about her a bit. It's hard because obviously Catherine didn't know her so she cannot really provide that level of detail, so I regularly put George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives. So it's important that they know who she was and that she existed."
Inspiring a Campaign Against Homelessness
In recent years, William has been actively preserving his mother's legacy by launching a personal campaign to eradicate homelessness, inspired by Diana's compassionate example. The heir to the throne has stated that her influence motivates him to educate his own children on this critical issue.
Speaking on a landmark television documentary, William said: "My mother introduced me to homelessness a long time ago. I have taken some inspiration and guidance from what my mother did, particularly with homelessness. That has grown more over the last few years. When I was very small my mother started talking about homelessness – much like I do now with my children on the school run."
Following in his mother's footsteps, William took his eldest son, George, to The Passage homelessness charity in London late last year. There, they created care packages and decorated a Christmas tree, continuing Diana's tradition of charitable work and instilling these values in the next generation.
