The Duchess of Sussex should not be styled as “Princess Meghan,” according to a new poll, with 97% of readers saying no.
Meghan Markle, who married Prince Harry in 2018, has never been called Princess Meghan. She is known by her royal title, The Duchess of Sussex, because she does not hold the title Princess Meghan. If she were to be called a Princess, her title would be Princess Harry of Wales.
Poll Results Show Overwhelming Opposition
At 7 am on October 27, the Daily Express asked readers: “Should Meghan Markle be styled as a Princess?” The poll ran until 10 am on October 28, with 97% of voters saying no, 2% saying yes, and 1% saying they don’t know.
One Daily Express reader said: “NO, she shouldn't be called Princess! Princess of what? Mayhem????” Someone else said: “No to Meghan being called a princess.”
Royal Title Rules Explained
Even if Meghan did want to use the title princess, it is believed she would not be known as Princess Meghan. This is because rules state that only those with royal blood can use the title of Prince or Princess followed by their first name. While Catherine, Princess of Wales, is widely known as Princess Catherine, she cannot refer to herself as such.
Royal editor Emily Ferguson spoke to former Buckingham Palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter on the latest episode of Royals Unscripted. He told Emily: “As far as taking titles away from Harry and Meghan, well, you can't really take the title prince away because he hasn't done anything wrong.”
“He's just rubbished the family, and that's a private matter. He was born a prince, and he'll die a prince,” he added. “If you take the dukedom away, then where does that leave Meghan? That makes Meghan in practice Princess Harry of Wales.”
Children's Titles and Royal Status
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s children both hold the titles of prince and princess, as they are royal by blood and their grandfather is the monarch. They held these titles even when living in the US. It is not known whether they will ever use these titles in a professional capacity when they are older.
This could be considered unlikely, as neither Harry nor Meghan is a working royal since stepping away from royal duties in 2020. While they are now living back in Britain, their royal status has not changed, and they remain non-working royals.
