Beatrice and Eugenie 'Should Lose Royal Titles' in Wake of Andrew Scandal
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are facing intensified demands to relinquish their royal titles, as they become increasingly implicated in the scandals surrounding their parents, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson. According to a recent poll conducted by the Mirror, a significant majority of readers have voiced their opinion that the sisters should be stripped of their titles, reflecting growing public scrutiny over their association with the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Overwhelming Public Verdict on Royal Titles
In a survey that garnered over 12,000 responses, Mirror readers were closely divided but leaned towards action against the princesses. Specifically, 56 percent of respondents, equivalent to 6,885 individuals, advocated for the removal of Beatrice and Eugenie's titles. In contrast, 42 percent, or 5,221 readers, believed the titles should be retained, while a mere 2 percent, comprising 214 respondents, remained undecided. This poll highlights the contentious nature of the issue, with many calling for the titles to be rescinded either voluntarily or through an Act of Parliament.
Background and Royal Decisions
The controversy stems from the ongoing Epstein scandal, which has deeply entangled the York family. Last October, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his royal titles and forced to relinquish his tenancy at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, a decision announced by King Charles. At that time, the King clarified that Beatrice and Eugenie would remain unaffected, citing his strong relationship with his nieces. However, since then, Andrew has faced further legal troubles, including an arrest in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, currently under investigation by Thames Valley Police.
Despite not being directly implicated in the Epstein files, Beatrice and Eugenie have maintained a low profile, yet their names have appeared in related documents, prompting calls for them to speak out about their parents' dealings with the convicted sex offender. A family friend revealed to People magazine that the sisters are desperate to hold onto their titles, stating, "They want to hold on to their royal status. It’s their identity." As non-working royals, they retain HRH and princess titles inherited from their father, adding to the debate over their appropriateness.
Expert Opinions Divided on Title Retention
Royal commentators and experts are split on whether Beatrice and Eugenie should renounce their titles. PR consultant Kayley Cornelius argued that giving up the titles could backfire, suggesting it might imply guilt and invite further scrutiny. She told the Express, "I believe that giving up their royal titles could backfire. At a time when public feeling is largely sympathetic, stepping away from those titles may feel unnecessary and premature." She emphasized that such a move should be a last resort to avoid unintended consequences.
On the other hand, royal biographer Andrew Lownie, author of the book Entitled, contended that the sisters have exploited their titles for personal gain in business ventures. He asserted, "They should renounce their titles. That's the first thing they should do because that's why there is interest. She’s always Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice when she’s doing things promoting businesses in the Middle East - that's utilising her royal position." Lownie added that without their royal status, their commercial activities would likely receive less attention, mirroring criticisms of their parents' actions.
As the debate continues, the future of Beatrice and Eugenie's royal titles remains uncertain, with public opinion and expert analysis shaping the discourse around accountability and royal privilege in modern times.
