Princess Eugenie marks her 36th birthday today, but royal expert Jennie Bond predicts the occasion may be overshadowed by the intense pressure engulfing the York family. The princess, along with her older sister Princess Beatrice, is understood to be angered over Buckingham Palace’s unwillingness to publicly back them, following revelations linking them to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein Files Revelation Sparks Controversy
Earlier this year, documents released by the US State Department—known as the Epstein Files—revealed that the sisters accompanied their mother, Sarah Ferguson, to the United States to meet Epstein in 2009. This occurred just days after Epstein was released from prison for soliciting a minor for prostitution. At the time, Beatrice was 20 years old and Eugenie was 19. It is important to note that there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by either princess in connection with this meeting.
Family Turmoil Intensifies
The situation has been compounded by recent events involving their parents. Last month, their father, Prince Andrew, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and has since secluded himself at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate. Meanwhile, their mother, Sarah Ferguson, who has not been seen in public for six months, is facing calls to testify in the United States regarding her knowledge of Epstein’s activities.
Amid this turmoil, Jennie Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, believes Eugenie may not feel like celebrating her birthday. She stated, "Both Eugenie and Beatrice must be feeling the heat of the headlines that are now turning on them. I doubt whether this birthday will be one she will particularly feel like celebrating in a big way."
Low Profile and Palace Relations
The sisters have opted to keep a low profile, with Bond suggesting Eugenie will spend her birthday out of public view and not openly with either parent. While King Charles invited both Beatrice and Eugenie to Sandringham for Christmas, seen as a bold statement of support, royal sources indicate the situation has changed drastically.
A source revealed, "The sisters are extremely unhappy. They feel they have been left out in the cold. They aren't being supported by Buckingham Palace and are certainly concerned they will lose their titles and privileges as a result of their parents’ conduct."
Royal Titles and Privileges at Risk
Beatrice and Eugenie, who are not full-time working royals, maintain homes on royal estates through historic deals arranged by their father. Beatrice has an apartment in St James’s Palace, and Eugenie resides at Ivy Cottage, a three-bedroom property at Kensington Palace. However, their positions are now under scrutiny.
Jennie Bond advises that it might be easier for the princesses to excuse themselves from Royal Family events and consider relinquishing their titles. She explained, "I think they would be wise to discuss whether they should give up their titles, step down from their charities and any public work, and just get on with their lives as happily married women with children to look after and careers to pursue. That might just be easier all round."
Future Royal Engagements in Doubt
Recent reports suggest the King may not invite Beatrice and Eugenie to Royal Ascot in June, where the royal family typically gathers during the five-day festival. While no final decision has been made, if they do attend, it is understood they would not participate in the carriage procession, highlighting their diminished standing within the monarchy.
As the York family navigates these challenges, the focus remains on how Beatrice and Eugenie will address their roles and titles moving forward, with potential implications for their public lives and royal connections.
