A Netflix survey has revealed that 54% of Brits are a nation of second-guessers, as the Sidemen brought the Shop from their hit show Outside to London. The pop-up challenged members of the public to trust their instincts.
Survey reveals nation of self-doubt
Britain has emerged as a nation plagued by self-doubt, with over half confessing they frequently second-guess their choices once made. Some 54% acknowledge feeling uncertain about decisions after committing to them, a Netflix survey has revealed.
Among the 2,000 British respondents polled, 46% concede they can be swayed from their initial judgement if others persuade them to reconsider. For those who do reverse course, the urge to uncover 'what could have been' proves almost irresistible. Over half (57%) admitted they would be desperate to learn what they'd sacrificed after exchanging one mystery reward for another.
Pop-up brings the Shop to life
This predicament became reality on Friday when Netflix brought to life the Shop from the Sidemen's latest series Outside - offering Britons the opportunity to claim £50,000-worth of prizes spanning from a humble egg timer to a solid gold bar.
The limited one-day pop-up tested members of the public on whether to back their gut instinct - or gamble their winnings for the possibility of departing with something superior.
Participants face Stick or Twist dilemma
Tobi from the Sidemen was accompanied by Moyo Ajibade, Josh Larkin, Paige Meade, Danielle Stockley and Heinz Baines to subject Londoners' decision-making abilities to the ultimate examination. Mirroring the programme, Tobi assumed the role of 'Voice of God' in the real-life 'Shop', providing commentary on proceedings and intensifying the pressure as participants made their selections.
Those fortunate enough to participate selected from one of six categories - A Piece of Gold, Hot Wheels, A Nice Ring, Good(ie) Bag, A Good Time and Go On, Surprise Me. Prizes varied from teabags, sweets and a wheel of cheese to designer jeweller, an electric bike, a high-end watch and a genuine gold bar.
However, before learning precisely what they'd secured, participants confronted the ultimate Stick or Twist dilemma - retain the mystery prize allocated to them, or relinquish it and take a chance on another from the identical category. Those who chose to Twist were initially shown the prize they'd surrendered, before their replacement prize was unveiled and they learnt whether their risk had succeeded, or left them regretting their choice.
88% chose to twist
With Bronze, Silver and Gold prizes concealed throughout every category, a single decision saw participants either upgrade to one of the day's most valuable prizes or surrender one. The predicament unfolded in real-time at the Shop today, with 88% opting to twist, and just 12% sticking.
Amongst the boldest gambles was a chap who unwittingly surrendered a £5,000 designer watch for a plastic egg timer. One bloke even arrived during his lunch break to secure a designer bag for his girlfriend, while Tobi and the Outside cast urged participants to take the gamble, or remain with what they possessed.
Supporters were also treated to live freestyles, football challenges, games and merchandise giveaways, with the activity inside the Shop transmitted onto a giant screen for crowds to observe. Speaking beforehand, Tobi Brown, Sidemen, said: "The Shop is all about temptations and second-guessing yourself, so it'll be interesting to see how brave people are when big-ticket prizes are on the line."
"I'll definitely be encouraging people to Twist - that's the whole fun of it. There are some seriously good prizes up for grabs, so if you're going to play it safe, don't blame me when you're left wondering what you could have won."
The physical Shop takes inspiration from the Sidemen's latest Netflix reality contest Outside, which features a group of content creators sharing accommodation in a forest while vying for a portion of a £1 million prize fund. Within the Shop, participants can spend from that shared pot on treats and creature comforts, ensuring every indulgence carries a price.
The complimentary, single-day experience welcomed visitors aged 18 and over at Boxpark Shoreditch between 12pm and 5pm on September 25.
