Victoria Derbyshire lost her temper with crew members behind the scenes of BBC Newsnight in an awkward encounter captured on a livestream. The host, 57, was filming her TV intro for an Instagram live when it accidentally caught the awkward moment, leading her to dash off set and grab her phone to end the stream.
Segment on Sir Ranulph Fiennes
Victoria was seen filming her introductory segment, explaining to viewers: “Friends and family of explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes say he’s been hidden away from his loved ones for months. His stepson tells Newsnight it’s ‘very painful’. We hear from one relative who came up with an extraordinary plan to finally track Sir Ranulph down to a London care home.”
The segment clearly wasn’t being filmed live, as she then turned to the assembled crew and snapped: “I think those pictures are mad. We don’t see Ranulph Fiennes as an explorer, we don’t say he’s an explorer.
“We don’t know who that woman is. We talk about the stepson, but we see a woman. They do not make sense, to me, but… No, we need to see him in his explorer gear! Don’t we?”
Visible images on screen
Visible on the screen were images of Arabella Pepper, Sir Ranulph’s sister-in-law, who snuck into a care home to try and establish contact with him.
Victoria went on: “He doesn’t look like an elderly, vulnerable man in our picture of him.
“But really, I’d have him as the really elderly, vulnerable man and him as an explorer, not some woman we don’t know! We don’t have to show her, we don’t have to show her! We’ve got time to find a picture of him in his explorer gear.”
Reaction to off-screen reply
Seemingly replying to someone off-screen, she snapped: “It’s not mad. Honestly. Ask Johnson! I bet you, 100% he’ll want the same. I will!” before jogging off-camera to snatch up her phone.
