Van der Valk star hints at show's future as series ends

Van der Valk star Marc Warren has addressed the future of the ITV show as the fourth series concludes. Warren and co-star Maimie McCoy returned earlier this month for a fourth installment, three years after season three aired.

Stars Tease Possible Return

Speaking about the show's future, Warren said: “We don’t know. It’s been out over the world, it’s got American, German, Dutch money and some money from ITV.

“What one would hope is that it is as well received and watched as it always has been. It’s always done really lovely figures, and I would love to do it again.”

McCoy added: “The thing about four is, it’s almost like it’s really found its feet and identity, and I think we have. When we started season four, it had maybe been a year since we shot the other ones, it feels like it was naturally growing.”

Explosive Fourth Series

Warren had earlier hinted at the scale of the new series, saying: “It felt like a bigger production… the scripts were great, we had a huge explosion in the first one.

“It felt a lot more expensive, a bigger crew, and it’s like everything we’d been learning over the three previous years culminated in this series. We’re much more of a family, there’s a much tighter bond within us, and also one of the family gets a health problem and that really unites us - it’s got a lot of heart.”

He added: “It really touches me, there’s something about it and it’s a show with a lot of heart, and as a group of actors, we were lucky to do it.”

Van der Valk, based on Nicolas Freeling’s crime thriller novels, first aired in 2020 as a reboot of the 1970s series with Barry Foster. The show follows detective Piet Van der Valk and his team solving mysteries and homicide cases in and around Amsterdam. All episodes are available to watch on ITVX.
