The oldest operating nightclub in the UK, Acapulco in Halifax, West Yorkshire, is seeking a blue plaque to recognise its place in British history, while continuing to offer drinks for just 75p. Opened in 1961, the venue is celebrating its 65th anniversary with a campaign for a Halifax Civic Trust Blue Plaque.
History and cheap drinks
Founded by Polish immigrant Ted Turczak, who escaped the Second World War, the club originally opened as what was almost an illegal casino. It later passed to Ted's children, Chez and Chris Turczak, and then to current owner Simon Jackson. Jackson first joined Acapulco as a DJ in 1992 and took over the club in 1996. Known locally as The Mighty Acca, the club has maintained a loyal following with its nostalgic atmosphere and famously cheap drinks, priced at 75p before 11pm for the past two decades.
'We've set all our drinks at 75 pence for the last 20 years,' said Jackson. 'The idea was that people who don't have that much money can come in, enjoy a night out and help get the club busy.'
Community focus
Jackson believes the atmosphere and sense of belonging keep people returning. 'It's still very much a 1980s, 1990s nightclub. It's quite party orientated, so you'll still get things like Village People played. But it's got character and obviously it's done alright.' The club focuses on entertainment and community, hosting giveaways, family-friendly events, and special nights for those who may struggle to access nightlife. 'It's not like a normal nightclub where it's all about raves, drugs and profit,' he said. 'This is more of a local thing; it's more about entertainment and enjoying yourself.'
The club holds regular Special Educational Needs (SEN) nights for children and young people with learning difficulties or disabilities in a safe, alcohol-free environment. 'I think we are the only nightclub in the area that do it, because nobody will touch it,' Jackson said. The SEN nights occur four to six times a year, around major holidays, with an £8 entry fee and everything free inside.
Plaque campaign and fundraising
Jackson was encouraged to apply for a blue plaque after two separate people suggested the idea. The full cost of a Halifax Civic Trust Blue Plaque is approximately £650. Any money raised above that will be donated to Halifax Street Angels, a charity that works on weekend nights to keep streets safe. 'It's only £650, but I thought, if everybody donates, and we can get thousands involved, then maybe we can raise thousands for the Halifax Street Angels,' Jackson said.
For Jackson, the plaque would also recognise the venue's resilience through tough periods like the Covid pandemic and the closure of many nearby establishments. 'At the moment, with so many pubs, clubs and restaurants closing, it just shows people there's still a bit of hope,' he said. 'I think originally, if I'm going back maybe 20 years ago, there was probably about eight or nine nightclubs, and now there's just us left.'
