A new BBC Panorama documentary, The Dark Side of Married at First Sight, has revealed allegations of rape and sexual assault from three former participants on Channel 4's reality show. The programme, presented by Noor Nanji, focuses on claims made by two women using pseudonyms, Lizzie and Chloe, and by Shona Manderson, who speaks in person. All three say they were subjected to non-consensual acts by their on-screen husbands during filming, with the men denying the allegations.
Lizzie told the documentary that her on-screen husband displayed an explosive temper during their honeymoon, and that sex turned violent, leaving her bruised. She alleged he threatened to have acid thrown at her if she told anyone, and later raped her, telling her: "You can't say no, you're my wife." She says she informed programme makers, CPL Productions, of the threat and her bruises, but filming continued and the show was broadcast. After it aired, she said she told CPL she had been raped.
Chloe described a similar ordeal, saying she said no but her husband proceeded anyway. "I just lay there and stared out of the window," she said, adding that he accused her of 'making me feel like a rapist' when she did not actively resist. She also reported the incident to producers, but the show went ahead.
In response, Channel 4 said it would be wrong to assess welfare decisions based on knowledge they did not have at the time, while CPL Productions described its protocols as "gold standard" and "industry-leading." An external review into contributor welfare was commissioned last month, and the documentary explores the timeline of what producers and broadcasters knew and when.
The programme also highlights a wave of social media criticism directed at the women, with some questioning why they did not report the alleged attacks to police and suggesting they are seeking compensation. The documentary, which runs for half an hour, fuels ongoing questions about duty of care in reality television and the risks of putting strangers in pressured, filmed environments.
