The Only Way Is Essex is reportedly set to launch a brand new spin-off that could see some of the programme's most famous faces reunite for explosive get-togethers.
ITV bosses are said to have green lit a 'therapy-focused' format that would witness past and present TOWIE personalities reflecting on some of the most pivotal chapters of their lives. The reality show first aired in 2010 and has followed its cast navigating weddings, parenthood, splits and family heartbreak across its 38 series. Now creators are reportedly scheming to dig deeper into the storylines audiences have witnessed develop over the years.
Former stars could reunite
According to The Sun, the team responsible for TOWIE presented the concept to senior figures at the broadcaster, who are understood to have backed the proposal. It might even create an opportunity for former partners Gemma Collins and James Argent to share screen time once more, years following their stormy romance.
An insider told the publication: "TOWIE is known for documenting everything from births and breakups to deeply personal turning points. And now they want to place the show's stars in a more introspective spotlight."
"Each episode will pair a cast member with a therapist, inviting them to open up on camera about defining moments in their lives."
Early stages of production
The source said there's no lack of compelling topics producers could tackle, including Lauren Goodger opening up about the heartbreaking death of her baby daughter Lorena, and Harry Derbidge sharing his battle with an eating disorder.
The programme is reportedly in its very early days, with producers now reaching out to former TOWIE personalities alongside current cast members. Shooting is anticipated to commence before a possible airing next year.
"It's in the early stages at the moment but the show is coming together and ITV and the production company are really keen to push ahead," the insider added. "It feels fresh and new, and gives fans of Towie even more content from their favourite faces."
Friction between current stars
Word of the planned spin-off emerges during continuing friction between present stars Harry and Elma Pazar. The once-tight pals had a falling out after drama from a cast holiday to Vietnam last year, with Harry claiming Elma had been spreading rumours.
Elma has now addressed the collapse of her friendship with Harry while appearing on Billie Faiers' You Alright Hun? podcast. She said: "We were really close, at one point we were inseparable, I was on the phone to Harry all the time, we lived through a lot together – we lived through Harry's worst days together."
"I'd say it was extremely hard for Harry but it was hard for both of us because you do take on your friends' problems." When asked about the current state of their relationship, Elma hinted at some progress but didn't foresee a return to their former closeness. She teased: "You'll see, but I'd say we're taking steps forward, but I would say there are no more steps."
