A Love Island producer has tragically passed away following an unexpected medical emergency while working on the popular reality programme. James Barker, an executive producer on Love Island USA, died at the age of 40 during production in Fiji.
Statement from ITV America and Peacock
A statement obtained by TMZ revealed that ITV America and Peacock will honor Barker in Tuesday's episode of Love Island USA. The statement read: "James' unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock. He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us." The cause of death remains unclear.
Final Instagram Post
James Barker's passing occurred just days after he marked the programme's launch with what would become his final Instagram post. He wrote: "We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care. Our Islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful... because here... they are." Fans flooded the comments with tributes, including "looked like a great guy! RIP" and "May he RIP."
Love Island USA vs UK
The sad news comes amid chatter that Love Island USA is becoming more successful than its UK equivalent. Viewers believe the UK edition must "step it up" to rival the quality of the USA version. One enthusiast commented: "UK has to step it up because the USA already had two challenges and a vote." Another criticized the lack of challenges in the UK edition. Love Island USA will be available to stream on ITVX from July 27, while Love Island UK airs Sundays to Fridays at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
