Rules of the game

The rules are simple; laugh and you're out and over the course of the series, the contestants will use every ounce of their comedic talents to try and break their opponents without cracking up themselves.

As always the series is packed with comedy cameos, format twists and surprises designed to lure laughs from both the players and the viewers.

Award-winning format

The first series of Last One Laughing won Best Entertainment Programme at the 2026 BAFTA Television Awards, with Bob Mortimer winning Best Entertainment Performance. The series also won the Comedy Entertainment award at the 2026 RTS Programme Awards.

The winner of the second series in March this year was David Mitchell. Opening up after his win, the Peep Show star said: "That was quite insane because I think we disappeared into a place where there was no laughter.

"I have to say, for all the bleakness at the end, I am delighted to win and I think that shows a want of character in me, but I was very pleased."

Halloween special and future episodes

The third series will air in 2027 but there is also a Halloween special of the show called Last One Laughing Halloween which will premiere with three episodes on October 23, with the last episode launching on October 30. It will feature comedians including Phil Wang, Harriet Dyer, Jack Dee and Lou Sanders.

Following the success of the first series, Jimmy Carr addressed the "simple premise" of the programme that led to it being recommissioned.

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, he said: "It's such a simple premise, and again, it's the comedians really committed to it. They're really committed to going, 'Right, we're going to play this game and take it seriously'.

"I think comedians can be a little bit competitive, not with each other so much. There's something about comedy where you escape competition through authenticity."
