James Acaster finally embraced the backstabbing spirit of Celebrity Traitors, but not in the way fans expected. During last night's episode, the 41-year-old refused to help his fellow Traitors, Maya Jama and King Kenny, in a challenge, effectively betraying them and drawing widespread criticism.
A Challenge of Trust and Betrayal
In a twist on the usual group challenges, the Faithful and Traitors were given separate tasks. The Faithful had to assemble shields from puzzle pieces to protect themselves from murder, while the Traitors had to steal pieces and assemble their own shield, which would have added £9,000 to the prize pot. The Traitors had to move around blindfolded Faithfuls, avoiding detection.
James, however, deemed the challenge too difficult and refused to participate, leaving Maya and Kenny to fumble in the dark until time ran out. He didn't even remove his blindfold to communicate, instead pointing at Michael Sheen and Bash and making it clear he would not move.
Criticism from Colleagues and Fans
The move was labeled a 'd*** move' and 'embarrassing' by the deputy TV editor, who noted that James's reluctance to play the game is wearing thin. An anonymous colleague wrote in a work Slack: 'James shirking his duties as a Traitor was actually the biggest ick of the season so far.'
On X, showbiz reporter Ed Gleave wrote that James 'might be the dullest booking ever,' adding that 'his refusal to take part in the mission was embarrassing.' User Confyna suggested James should 'put himself out of misery and banish himself,' while @iluvmyusicc said he 'really ruined this show for refusing to play the Traitor role.'
Defenders and the Bigger Picture
Some defend James, arguing his awkward reluctance makes him an interesting player. However, the editor contends there's a difference between being a 'bad Traitor' and refusing to be one at all, which is 'boring' and risks making the show dull.
The Celebrity Traitors continues tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
