All Creatures Great and Small fans have been left heartbroken after Maggie (Mollie Winnard) made a confession to Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) during the second episode of the new season. The Channel 5 drama returned last Thursday (September 17) with an exciting new episode as it moves into the post-war era, and in the first episode, Skeldale House beamed with joy as little Jimmy headed to school.
New Season Developments
Eccentric vet Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) is enjoying a new romance with Dorothy (Maimie McCoy), and there's a new veterinary surgeon in town, leaving James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) displeased. During episode two, which aired on Thursday (September 24), keen farmer Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) brought home the new Friesian cows to Heston Grange in hopes of increased milk yield.
Elsewhere, Siegfried was on a mission to improve his vet practice as he felt the rivalry between Skeldale House and the newcomer, Granville Bennett (Caolan McCarthy), and also butted heads with Dorothy.
Maggie's Confession
Mrs. Hall teamed up with Mrs. Pumphrey (Patricia Hodge) at the Women's Institute to discuss how to support the locals as they tried to resume normal life following World War II, and agreed to run a community food bank. However, it appeared not all of Darrowby is finding the new era so propitious, as Mrs. Hall caught Drovers' barmaid Maggie stealing food from the pantry.
As fans of the show will know, Maggie’s husband, Arthur, died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, leaving her alone with their young son, Albert, and struggling to cope.
"It was harder when my folks moved away, but we were still doing alright," Maggie emotionally told Mrs. Hall. "I mean, my widows' pension doesn't really stretch far. But I had Arthur's parents nearby, and they could have Albert while I was at The Drovers, and then they went down south to look after her sister. And Albert's chest got bad, and just with paying for his medicine and not being able to pick up as many shifts."
Fans React
Taking Maggie's hand, Mrs Hall reassured her: "It doesn't take much to go from managing to not, especially with a little one", as Maggie added, "Never thought that I'd end up stealing for the WI, though."
"Stealing?" Mrs. Hall replied, "Don't be daft. That food's for whoever needs it. Lord knows I was thankful for any help when my Edward was small. I was lucky I had a friend I could rely on, and so do you."
Maggie's confession and Mrs. Hall's kindness have left All Creatures Great and Small viewers in tears. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "Oh Maggie. That just made me tear up #acgas", while a second commented: "Gosh poor Maggie."
