Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is finally set to walk free from prison in Emmerdale, after weeks of being wrongly held on a murder charge. Her release comes thanks to Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), who has been manipulating events behind the scenes. But the freedom comes at a heavy price, as Sarah is far from ready to forgive her grandmother.
How Sarah Secured Charity's Release
Charity took the fall for Sarah after Sarah accidentally killed Todd (Caroline Harker), claiming it was self-defence. However, Sarah later discovered Charity had lied about baby Leyla and changed her story to punish her, leading to Charity being charged with murder.
While inside, Charity faced a terrifying ordeal when drugs were planted in her cell, forcing her to undergo a full body search. The incident triggered a PTSD episode, prompting the Dingles to try to persuade Sarah to change her story. But Sarah, the most stubborn of the family, flatly refused, and even Cain could not force her to act.
It was Mackenzie's (Lawrence Robb) threats to expose the truth that finally pushed Sarah into action. She marched to the police station to change her story, only to discover the law does not work that way, and her attempt to exonerate Charity only made matters worse. However, Sarah then spotted Serena (Casey Al Shaqsy) and Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge) conspiring together, and realised she had leverage to use.
Blackmail and a Shocking Release
Sarah began blackmailing the two women with what she knew about them, including their role in covering up Todd's murder. Shaken by Sarah's threats, Serena visited Charity in prison, much to Charity's surprise. Thea then tried to confront Sarah directly, but it did not have the desired effect.
When Thea caught up with Serena back in town, she was eager to hear how the visit with Charity went, but the news was bad. There was no way out without Thea being forced to do Sarah's bidding.
As a result, Charity was gobsmacked when a prison guard told her she was going home. Sarah's plan had worked. Charity was elated to be released, but her joy was soon crushed when Sarah was not there to meet her.
Homecoming and Unfinished Business
Things are not going to return to normal. When Charity gets home, she asks to speak to Sarah privately, but Sarah is not ready to forgive. Charity might be out of prison, but she is still guilty of her crimes against Sarah, and there may still be serious punishment on the horizon. The question now is what Sarah will do to her gran to get revenge.
