DWTS Fans Outraged as 'Best Dancer' Whitney Leavitt Axed Before Finale
DWTS fans rage over shock elimination of Whitney Leavitt

Viewers of Dancing with the Stars are in a state of uproar, threatening to boycott the season 34 finale after the shock elimination of a contestant widely considered the competition's most talented performer.

A Semifinal Shocker

During the semifinals episode that aired on Tuesday, 19th November 2024, the remaining celebrity and professional duos delivered two performances each: one to a Prince song in a previously used dance style and another in a brand new style. The night concluded with the unexpected departure of Whitney Leavitt, star of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and her professional partner, Mark Ballas.

Their elimination sent shockwaves through the fanbase, not least because their performances had earned near-perfect acclaim from the judges. The pair scored an impressive 29 out of a possible 30 points for both of their dances, placing them tied for second on the judges' leaderboard. The panel praised their routines as "literal perfection" and "incredible."

Fan Fury Erupts Online

Despite the stellar judges' scores, it was revealed that Leavitt and Ballas failed to secure enough votes from the public to advance. The decision prompted an immediate and furious backlash on social media platform X.

One incensed fan wrote, "Whitney is the best dancer on that show BY A MILE with one of the best choreographers as a partner and we don’t even get to see a freestyle from her."

Another viewer echoed the sentiment, declaring the show a "popularity contest" that had ruined its core purpose. "I now have no reason to watch #DWTS because it’s clearly not about the dancing. Voting Whitney off was a popularity contest and had nothing to do with her talent," they stated.

A third comment read, "The hate Whitney has received is actually disgusting, she was the best dancer in the competition #DWTS."

The Other Side of the Coin

However, not all viewers were surprised by the outcome. Some suggested that Leavitt's previous comments and perceived attitude played a significant role in her downfall.

One person pointed to a remark where Leavitt allegedly said she only did her reality show to get on DWTS, commenting, "Fans don’t forget, and the votes showed it." Another user claimed, "Whitney went home because in the end she wasn't very likeable and the remaining contestants are working much harder."

Leavitt's dance background also became a point of contention throughout the season. She holds a degree in dance from Brigham Young University and had previously competed against current DWTS pro Witney Carson, leading some to question whether she had an unfair advantage.

Other theories circulating among fans alleged favouritism from the judges, who are known to be fond of partner Mark Ballas and potentially eager to see him win again.

The five couples who successfully advanced to next week's finale are: Elaine and Alan, Alix and Val, Robert and Witney, Dylan and Daniella, and Jordan and Ezra.

New episodes of Dancing with the Stars continue to air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+, available for streaming the following day on Hulu.
