Coronation Street's Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) receives life-changing news in upcoming scenes when he is diagnosed with breast cancer. In recent episodes, Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) discovered that the BRCA gene runs in the family and is set to undergo testing to see if she carries it. When Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) updates Kit, he wonders if the gene could be linked to the health problems he is experiencing.
Unbeknown to his family, Kit has already sought medical advice off-screen. Actor Jacob Roberts explained: 'He finds a lump, then he goes and gets it checked out. And then I think there's some discharge from the lump. And then it's like, "Oh, this is serious"'.
Kit's dilemma
Roberts added: 'He knows something's wrong. He doesn't know what it is at this point. He just knows this isn't normal. So he goes to the doctors and has check-ups and they don't exactly give him an answer straight away. So he's in a bit of a dilemma really. He's concerned about what's going on.'
With Gemma and Bernie worried about their own health and the health of Gemma's daughters, they haven't yet considered the possibility that Kit could also be affected – and Kit doesn't want to tell them any different. Roberts revealed that Kit initially decides to keep his diagnosis to himself: 'He really doesn't want to worry anyone until he gets concrete news that he's got it and he can gradually tell people.'
Confiding in Todd
Though Kit keeps his family in the dark, there is one unlikely neighbour that he chooses to confide in – Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce). Roberts pointed out: 'I think that happens in real life as well. You end up telling people who are not actually connected with you.'
When Kit calls in at the Rovers in the middle of Debbie Webster's (Sue Devaney) birthday party, he finds himself overwhelmed by his emotions when she makes a heartfelt speech to Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan). Kit escapes to the backyard, where Todd finds him and asks what's on his mind.
Roberts said: 'He feels safe with Todd because I also feel like Todd has his back. He can tell Todd certain things that won't go further, as it does on the street. It catches like wildfire. But with Todd, I think he'll keep his secrets.'
'And it's just to offload why he's being a certain way. And maybe Todd gets him in that certain situation.'
