Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) has been struggling since suffering a stroke several weeks ago in Coronation Street. She was rushed to hospital after collapsing in the kitchen, where it was later revealed that her stroke had been caused by strangulation during sex with Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne). The stroke significantly affected her ability to move and talk, and she has since been undergoing speech and physiotherapy.
Betsy's frustration grows as Lauren visits
Since returning home, Betsy has mostly stayed inside No.6, despite Lisa Connor-Swain’s (Vicky Myers) suggestions that she spend some time outside. In upcoming scenes, Betsy finds herself frustrated when Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) visits her but spends most of the time on her phone texting Ollie Driscoll (Raphael Akuwudike).
Betsy and Lauren’s relationship has faced several bumps recently, with the pair falling out over Dylan’s involvement in causing Betsy’s stroke. While Betsy didn’t want to blame Dylan, Lauren believed he needed to face punishment, causing a huge rift between them. Their argument resulted in Lauren storming out and leaving Betsy alone. Betsy was unable to get to the bathroom by herself and was left humiliated when she had an accident. After receiving a dressing down from Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King), Lauren apologised and she and Betsy made up.
Heartbreaking confession and a breakthrough
After Lauren leaves following her most recent visit, Betsy heartbreakingly confesses to Lisa that she feels lonely. The next day, Betsy makes a major breakthrough with her physiotherapist when she stands for the first time since her stroke. To celebrate, Lauren tells Ollie that they should take her some of his cake, but how will Betsy feel when her best friend turns up with Ollie in tow?
A trip to the Bistro goes downhill
Later in the week, Lauren turns up again, this time with a plan for the day. She announces to Betsy that they are going to the Bistro, and that it is not optional. Lauren surely means well, but when they get there, things start to go downhill fast. When Betsy knocks some cutlery off the table, Lauren rushes to pick it up, attracting the attention of Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney). Debbie jokes that Betsy must be drunk, leaving her mortified. The interaction may put her off leaving the house again and exacerbate her loneliness.
