Coleen Rooney has explained why her son Cass's name is spelled with a C rather than a K. The 40-year-old shares four sons—Kai, Klay, Kit, and Cass—with husband Wayne Rooney. The family are inviting fans into their home through a new Disney Plus series titled The Real Rooneys.
The 10-episode reality series follows the family during a pivotal year, showing Wayne and Coleen juggling work responsibilities with raising their four sons.
Why Cass is spelled with a C
Coleen previously shared the reasoning behind Cass's name during her time on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2024. She told campmates: "I looked up the meaning of the name Cassius and with a K it meant blackbird, and with a C it meant clever."
Coleen and Wayne chose Cassius, with Mac as his middle name—a nod to her maiden name, McLoughlin, and her friends' nickname for her, Coleen Mac. Since Coleen's middle name is Mary, Cass shares the initials CMR with his mother.
She added: "Cass Mac Rooney meant 'clever son of Rooney, that's the meaning. CMR. That's the only connection I've got to the kids!"
Opening up about family life
Speaking to the Press Association at the series premiere in London, Coleen said it felt like the right time to show audiences their home life. She said: "We don't have to prove ourselves. But what I think is nice is that [the series shows] we are real people."
She added: "I think people looking at people in the public eye think they're not real and we don't do things everyone else does, so I think they will get a taste of that on the series."
Coleen also said: "I think the big thing is the world has changed and everything gets played out on social media, whether you are in the public eye or not. Time has moved on, but also we had a taste of it after doing our own documentary each and having people in the house and filming, which opened our eyes."
What the series shows
The Real Rooneys follows the couple over a year while Wayne steps away from football management, swapping the touchline for school runs, and Coleen embraces the biggest opportunities of her career. The family of six live in a home in Cheshire, close to Knutsford.
Coleen, originally from Croxteth, also spoke about having four boys: "I would've liked a girl for Wayne, I wasn't desperate, he would've liked a girl, I wasn't bothered either way."
The couple have been married since 2008 after starting a relationship in their teens. Wayne retired from football in January 2021 at age 35 and now works as a TV pundit. The Real Rooneys streams exclusively on Disney+ from Thursday, September 24.
