A vintage reseller was shocked to discover that a £9 box she bought in a charity shop was actually a pet ashes urn. Christy Grace, who resells vintage items for profit, found the box during a recent thrifting trip and was heartbroken when she realized what it was.
An Unexpected Find
The box, which looked like a trinket or butter dish from a distance, was inscribed with the words "My beloved Lady," hinting at its former owner. In a TikTok video, Christy said: "I can't believe this was at the thrift store. This made me so sad."
Christy explained that she recognized the object as a pet urn because of its distinct look and shape. The urn was empty, leading her to speculate about how it ended up in the shop.
Possible Explanations
Christy told Newsweek: "Since it was empty, it could be one of two things. Either the owner spread the ashes and decided to donate it. The alternative is that the owner is no longer with us and someone else donated it. Whether they emptied it first or it was emptied by someone at the store is unclear."
Viral Reaction
Christy's video garnered 1.9 million views and hundreds of responses. One commenter joked: "If my kids thrift our dead pets ashes after I die, I will haunt them." Another said: "I would buy it and find a pretty place for Lady to rest." A third added: "I’m putting in my will that the ashes of my pets are to be put in my coffin with me. Just arrange their urns like they’re cuddling with me one last time."
