Michael Sheen was eliminated from Celebrity Traitors minutes into the series two final after Maya Jama and King Kenny chose the Welsh actor as their final murder victim, leaving viewers at home devastated.
Audiences tuned in for the concluding instalment on Friday, October 30, to discover the ultimate outcome of the series.
James Acaster's confession
The previous night, comic James Acaster confessed to being a Traitor during a roundtable discussion, a strategy never deployed before in the show. While there was considerable pressure on Michael Sheen, attention quickly shifted to James when the Welsh performer directed suspicion towards him as they discussed Ross Kemp's murder in plain sight.
James was enlisted as a Traitor by Maya Jama and Richard E Grant early in the series, but from the outset he made it clear to host Claudia Winkleman that he only wanted to be a Faithful. As the group closed in on him during the Round Table, he revealed he was actually a Traitor, resulting in his banishment.
Final murder and fan reaction
Before being banished, James told the group: "I am so proud of you guys for catching me the way that you did, and I wanted it to be that I was found logically and in a way [where] you followed clues and got me."
Seven celebrities progressed to the final episode: Michael Sheen, Maya Jama, King Kenny, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, James Blunt, Sebastian Crost and Romesh Ranganathan. The surviving Traitors were Maya and Kenny. Other contestants who served as Traitors during the series included Richard E Grant, who became the first Traitor ever banished at a series' opening Round Table, and Hannah Fry.
Maya and King Kenny, real name Kenny Oghenovo Ojuederie, were forced to carry out one final murder at the opening of the final episode. The pair chose to eliminate Michael Sheen, prompting an outpouring on X, formerly known as Twitter. One viewer wrote: "These traitors are actually idiots. Why go for Michael? It's SO OBVIOUS #celebritytraitors." Another added: "#CelebrityTraitors YOU COWARDS ! ! ! ! ! Not my Michael." A third said: "NO MICHAEL, YOU WILL BE AVENGED #TheTraitors #CelebrityTraitors."
Sheen's reaction
Responding to his departure after discovering his death warrant from the Traitors, Michael said: "Ah the time has come. Can't say I'm surprised but I am incredibly disappointed. Gutted that I got so close to the end. It's been absolutely unforgettable and I've loved every minute of it."
Celebrity Traitors is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
