A debate has erupted on social media after a conversation on the reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother about whether it is discriminatory to refuse to date a trans woman. The discussion began when India Willoughby, a TV journalist who transitioned from male to female, asked her housemates about their dating preferences.
Singer Ginuwine responded that he would choose not to date a trans woman, stating, 'That doesn't make me scared.' Willoughby later suggested a kiss, which Ginuwine declined, leaning away. The exchange divided viewers, with some calling it transphobic and others defending it as a personal preference.
Transgender model and songwriter Miss SaHHara said the comments reflected ignorance rather than transphobia, noting that Ginuwine was comfortable conversing with Willoughby. However, Dr Liadh Timmins of King's College London described the remarks as transphobic, arguing that refusing to date someone solely because they are trans is prejudicial, especially when physical differences may be indistinguishable.
The debate has extended beyond the show, with a video from US radio host Charlamagne Tha God defending Ginuwine's stance garnering over 350,000 views on YouTube. Willoughby faces possible eviction from the show on Friday.
