BBC producers were forced to put an apology onscreen after Texas star Sharleen Spiteri unexpectedly swore onstage at Radio 2 in the Park in Stirling today.
The singer, 58, appeared to believe her comments would be bleeped out when she roared: “F*** this!” during a lunchtime performance that was being broadcast to viewers on the BBC iPlayer.
Moment of the outburst
The moment came as she paused the gig in City Park, Stirling, to do up her shoes. She told the crowd: “I know that the audience were looking going, can she tie a lace?
“If I wasn't on the BBC I think anyone who's been at a Texas show knows what I would say, right there? But I am on my best behaviour today.” The audience responded with light boos, suggesting they wanted her to swear.
Onscreen apology
She replied: “Do we want a bleep? Stirling do you really want a bleep? F*** this! Let's do it!” The singer then launched into Texas' 1997 hit Say What You Want.
An apology appeared on screen reading: “You are watching Radio 2 In The Park Live. We apologise if you've been offended by anything in this stream.”
Presenter apology and line-up
After the performance Radio 2's Jo Wiley also said sorry, telling viewers: “Of course, there was bad language for which we apologise.”
Texas leads an all-star line up at Radio 2 in the Park, alongside Jack Savoretti, Lulu, The Script, Blue, Simple Minds, Deacon Blue and James Blunt. Many of the station's presenters are also DJ'ing with sets from Vernon Kay, Romesh Ranganathan and Jeremy Vine.
