Scott Mills' 90s Joke Awkward After BBC Sacking

Scott Mills' lighthearted joke about life in the 1990s has resurfaced and been deemed 'awkward' following his sacking from the BBC last week. The former Radio 2 host participated in an Instagram trend on March 17, posting pictures of Ellen DeGeneres instead of himself, as some believe they look alike.

The BBC terminated Mills' contract after obtaining new information relating to his personal conduct, which contravened their culture and values. The corporation confirmed it was made aware in 2017 of an ongoing police investigation into “serious sexual offences” against a teenage boy, which was closed in 2019 with no arrest or charge.

Mills' joke has not aged well, as DeGeneres also ended her show in 2021 following allegations of a toxic work environment. Social media users commented on the irony, with one saying, 'Well this is awkward now, isn’t it.'

The 53-year-old was taken off air from his Radio 2 show on March 25 and his contract was terminated on March 27. He had taken over the flagship breakfast show from Zoe Ball in 2025.

The BBC stated: 'Scott Mills had a long career across the BBC... We hope people understand that there is a limit to what we can say because we have to be mindful of the rights of those involved.'
