Simon Mayo and Jo Whiley are leaving the BBC Radio 2 Drivetime show as part of a major shake-up at the UK's most popular radio station. Mayo has hosted the programme since 2010, but tensions reportedly arose after Whiley joined as co-presenter in May, prompting a listener backlash.
Whiley will remain with Radio 2 but move to a 7pm-9pm slot from January, leaving the station in need of a new Drivetime team. She was the only female presenter on the daytime schedule, and the BBC is expected to face pressure to appoint another woman, with Sara Cox considered a likely candidate.
Mayo will continue working with the BBC, including his 5 Live film show with Mark Kermode, but will focus on a two-book deal with publisher Transworld. He described his time at Radio 2 as 'my happiest in radio' and defended Whiley against online abuse, calling her a 'warmhearted and loyal friend'.
Whiley said Mayo was a 'great friend' and expressed excitement about her new show, which will feature music, guests and live sessions. The changes follow Chris Evans' departure from the Breakfast show to Virgin Radio, with Zoe Ball set to replace him.
