David Beckham was among the famous faces attending the first day of Wimbledon on Centre Court, where he was spotted joining a Mexican wave in the Royal Box, proving BBC commentator Andrew Castle wrong.

Beckham Joins the Wave

During a changeover in the match between world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Miomir Kecmanovic, spectators at Centre Court started a Mexican wave. As the wave approached the Royal Box, Andrew Castle commented: "The wave sometimes dies around about the Royal Box, we can’t have that. Keep an eye on them." Beckham, seated with his mother, stood up and participated, prompting Castle to say: "Oh that's good."

Other Celebrities in Attendance

Beckham's son Romeo Beckham was also present with girlfriend Kim Turnball. The Duke of Kent sat next to Beckham, and television personality Mary Berry was spotted nearby. Opera star Katherine Jenkins was seated almost directly in front of Beckham, nine years after a leaked email from Beckham criticized her OBE.

Background on Beckham and Jenkins

In 2017, an email from Beckham to his advisor was leaked, in which he wrote: "Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F***ing joke." Jenkins later told The Sun in 2018: "I don't know why, again, that was aimed at me. I also don't feel the need to defend this, by the way. I know what I've done and when I got the OBE it was given to me for music and for charity."

Beckham's Knighthood

Beckham received his knighthood in November 2025 from King Charles for his services to sport and charity.
